The transmissions in the Mazda 3 are able to take your driving experience to the next level. They work to combine the best features of an automatic with those of a manual, no matter which type you prefer to drive. The secret to their incredible performance is SkyActiv technology, which forms a part of every transmission option for the Mazda 3.

SkyActiv Technology in the Mazda 3 Transmission

Transmissions play a key role in fuel efficiency as well as driving experience for your Mazda 3. Mazda has listened to drivers and discovered that their perfect transmission will give them complete control over their vehicle, which is what the SkyActiv transmissions do. Each transmission has it advantages, with the SkyActiv-Drive offering an automatic that feels like a manual and the SkyActiv-MT giving you class-leading weight for a crisp shifting feel.

SkyActiv-MT Mazda 3 Transmission

The standard SkyActiv-MT 6-speed transmission in the Mazda 3 is compact and lightweight. It gives drivers access to the crisp shifting typically reserved for sports cars as well as a superior fuel economy. This was achieved by reducing the size of the transmission and reducing its weight by up to 16 percent. When paired with the SkyActiv-G 2.0-liter engine, this Mazda 3 transmission only needs 8.2 L/100km in the city and 5.9 liters on the highway. These numbers only increase slightly to 9.2 and 6.6 liters, respectively, with the SkyActiv-G 2.5-liter engine.

SkyActiv-Drive Transmission

The SkyActiv-Drive 6-speed transmission is an available upgrade across the Mazda 3 trim levels and features a SPORT mode. It gives you the direct feel associated with manual transmissions thanks to its lockup range of over 80 percent. At the same time, it also boosts fuel economy when at low speeds and offers smooth shifting. The result is an automatic transmission that excels in every aspect. This version of the SkyActiv-Drive is only found with the SkyActiv-G 2.0-liter engine. It needs 8.0 L/100km in the city and 5.9 L/100km on the highway.

Upgraded SkyActiv-Drive Transmission

The SkyActiv-Drive transmission with i-ELOOP is a variation of the previous Mazda 3 transmission available with the Technology Package on the Mazda 3 GT. i-ELOOP technology is a system that boosts fuel economy by storing the energy generated during deceleration to power electrical components such as the audio system. Thanks to i-ELOOP technology, this transmission offers better fuel economy than the other SkyActiv-Drive option. It only needs 8.2 L/100km in the city and 6.0 on the highway.

Another transmission option is the SkyActiv-Drive 6-speed with paddle shifters. In addition to SPORT mode, it also has paddle shifters and a Drive Selection Switch. This transmission is also only found with the 2.5-liter engine and needs 8.7 L/100km in the city and 6.5 on the highway.

Transmission Availability

Once you are familiar with the various Mazda 3 transmission options, it is time to consider which ones are an option on each particular model. The Mazda 3 G, GX, and GS trims all come standard with the SkyActiv-G 2.0-liter engine and the SkyActiv-MT transmission. You can, however, upgrade these models to the SkyActiv-Drive 6-speed with SPORT mode. The GT trim also comes standard with the SkyActiv-MT transmission but is paired with the SkyActiv-G 2.5-liter engine. You can upgrade this trim to the SkyActiv-Drive 6-speed with SPORT mode and the other related features. To add to the i-ELOOP system for fuel economy, add the Technology Package.
