With four trim levels and two body styles, it can be somewhat challenging to keep track of the specifications for the Mazda 3. The 4-door sedan, referred to simply as the Mazda 3, comes in the G, GX, GS, or GT trim. The 5-door hatchback, known as the Mazda 3 Sport, is available as the GX, GS, or GT.

2016 Mazda 3 Engines, Transmissions, and Mechanics

The Mazda 3 G, GX, and GS all come standard with the SkyActiv-G 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine for 155 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 150 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. The GT trim comes with the SkyActiv-G 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with 184 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 185 pound-feet at 3,250 rpm. All models come standard with front-wheel drive and the SkyActiv-MT 6-speed manual transmission. The GX or GS trims can be upgraded to the SkyActiv-Drive 6-speed automatic with a SPORT mode or the GT can be upgraded to the SkyActiv-Drive 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters as well as SPORT mode and then add an optional Drive Selection switch. By adding the Technology Package to the GT trim, the automatic can also have i-ELOOP regenerative braking.

Fuel economy in the Mazda 3 varies by transmission, engine and body style. The G, GX, or GS with the manual get 8.0 L/100km city and 5.8 highway in the sedan version. The Mazda 3 Sport GX or GS with this transmission get 8.2 city/5.9 highway. Upgrading those models to the automatic gives you 7.9 city/5.7 highway for the sedan or 8.0/5.9 with the Sport. The GT trim is more complicated, getting 9.3/6.4 L/100km with the sedan and 9.2/6.6 with the Sport. Upgrading to the automatic boosts economy to 8.4/6.1 and 8.7/6.5, respectively, while the automatic with i-ELOOP gets 8.2/5.9 and 8.2/6.0, respectively.

2016 Mazda 3 Comfort and Convenience

All Mazda 3 models come with a 6-way manually adjustable seat for the driver and a 4-way adjustable passenger’s seat. The Luxury Package on the GT trim adds power adjustment and manual lumbar for the driver and the GS or GT trims add heated front seats. The rear seatback always folds and it splits 60/40 on the Sport GX and all GS or GT trims. The GS and GT trims add leather to the steering wheel, shift knob, and parking brake handle.

Every 2016 Mazda 3 comes with a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, day/night rearview mirror, double-action power locks that sense speed, remote keyless entry, push button start, and power windows. Some models also have air conditioning or dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise controls on the steering wheel, HomeLink on the auto-dimming rearview mirror, and Advanced Keyless Entry.

Every model of the 2016 Mazda 3 has a 12-volt power outlet, AM/FM radio, an audio display screen, an auxiliary audio port, and a USB port.
